Why a left and right test matters
Most people only notice a dead speaker when a meeting starts and audio cuts in and out. Testing each side on its own takes a few seconds and catches a loose cable, a worn driver, or a stereo setting that quietly collapsed to mono. It is the same reason audio engineers ping each channel before a session.
How the tone test works
The site uses your browser's Web Audio API to generate a sine wave at the frequency you pick. A StereoPannerNode sends that tone fully left, fully right, or down the middle. The waveform is created in your tab, so nothing is uploaded or recorded.
Pure sine tones are the standard test signal used in audio measurement. The Audio Engineering Society documents this approach in its standards for output level and channel verification.
Common speaker problems
"One side is completely silent"
Try a different cable or port first. If the silence stays on the same physical side, the speaker driver is the likely culprit. If it follows the cable, the cable or the audio jack on your device is the issue.
"Audio plays from the wrong device"
Browsers send audio to whatever device the operating system marks as default. Set the right output in Settings, Sound (Windows) or System Settings, Sound, Output (macOS), then click Test Speakers again.
"Tone sounds distorted"
Drop the system volume to about half and try again. Distortion at high volume often means the output stage is clipping, not that the speaker is broken.
Quick tips before a meeting
- • Test both speakers and your mic together so you catch echo before the call.
- • If you are on a laptop, plug in headphones and re-run the test to compare.
- • Bluetooth devices can take a second to wake. Run the tone twice if the first attempt is silent.
- • Keep the volume reasonable so the meter is not the only thing your room hears.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test left and right speakers separately?
Click Left only to send the tone to your left speaker, then Right only for the other side, and Both to confirm stereo. If one side is silent, the speaker, cable, or output device is the issue.
I hear the tone in both sides when I pick Left only. Why?
Your output is probably set to mono, or a bone conduction or speaker accessibility setting is collapsing both channels. Check your operating system sound settings.
Does the frequency slider matter?
It helps you hear how each speaker handles different pitches. A clean tone at 200 Hz tests low end, 440 Hz is close to a phone dial tone, and 1000 Hz reveals tweeter problems.
Why is there no sound at all?
Raise the system volume, unmute the tab in your browser's tab strip, and confirm the right output device is selected. Bluetooth speakers sometimes need a second click to start a fresh audio session.
